Tualatin, OR, (December 8, 2021) — Powin, a global leader in the design and manufacture of safe and scalable battery energy storage solutions, was selected by Leeward Renewable Energy (Leeward) to install a 20 MW battery energy storage system (BESS) at the Rabbitbrush Solar Project, now under construction in Kern County, California, marking the first time that Powin and Leeward have teamed up. The 100-MWac Rabbitbrush Solar Project is the first solar project Leeward is constructing since integrating First Solar’s solar development platform in early 2021.
As part of its agreement with Leeward, Powin will provide the fully integrated battery energy storage system including cells, enclosures, cabling, transformers, inverters, and all software and controls systems for the Rabbitbrush Solar Project. The solar + storage hybrid facility will specifically utilize Powin’s Stack 230P BESS, a 1000Vdc solution for 1.5 hour+ power applications, including ancillary services. Installation of the system is expected to commence in January 2022. Additionally, Powin is responsible for commissioning the battery energy storage system and for providing ongoing onsite O&M services pertaining to the BESS.
Geoff Brown, CEO of Powin noted, “‘Powin is pleased to partner with Leeward on the Rabbitbrush project. Leeward has a strong pipeline of renewable energy projects and Powin is delighted to be their trusted partner for this project.”
Once in operation, the Rabbitbrush Solar + Storage Project will generate enough electricity to power nearly 40,000 homes per year, while displacing 48,000 metric tons of CO2 annually, equivalent to removing 10,500 combustion engine cars from the road.
Construction of the Rabbitbrush Solar Project is expected to be completed by December 2022.
“Leeward is proud to partner with Powin, a global leader in battery energy storage solutions, to provide the storage system at our Rabbitbrush facility, the first of many solar + storage projects for Leeward,” said Mark Hensley, SVP Project Execution and Procurement for Leeward. “We look forward to working with the Powin team to help deliver clean, renewable energy to our customers.”
For nearly the past decade, Powin has worked to advance its patented battery management technology and develop market leading product offerings. Headquartered in Tualatin, Oregon, Powin has built over 2,000 MWh of systems, in 12 states and 8 countries.
