Southern Power, a leading U.S. wholesale energy provider and subsidiary of Southern Company, announced this week that battery-based energy storage projects at its Tranquillity and Garland solar facilities in California are now fully operational.
Powin was selected as the provider for the battery energy storage systems at Tranquillity and Garland. The two project sites feature 640 MWh of energy storage systems and more than 3,000 units of Powin’s Stack 230E product, which will provide the system with flexible resource capacity to make better use of the energy captured by PV solar.
“These co-located solar and storage projects are a first of their kind for Southern Power,” said Southern Power President Bill Grantham. “We expect these new battery-based energy storage projects to enhance California’s grid reliability. The combination of our solar technology and these new energy storage resources will further position Southern Power to meet our customers’ needs as the energy industry continues to evolve.”
The battery energy storage additions will enhance California’s grid reliability by providing Southern California Edison and the California ISO with additional flexible resource capacity that will assist in further integrating intermittent renewable energy into the grid. The Garland Solar Facility Battery Storage project will add 88 MW and 352 MWh of energy storage, while 72 MW and 288 MWh of energy storage will be added to the Tranquillity Solar Facility.
“We’re extremely proud of the whole team at Powin for their part in bringing two of the largest solar and storage projects in the world online,” said Geoff Brown, CEO of Powin. “We’d like to thank Southern Power for putting their trust in us to get these impactful projects completed. The integration of solar and energy storage at this scale will be key to providing sustainable, renewable power throughout the world.”
The resource adequacy benefits of both facilities are being sold under a 20-year power purchase agreement to Southern California Edison.
Powin is also providing full, 20-year long term operations and maintenance service for these projects, which includes extended warranty, capacity maintenance, availability guarantees, 24/7 remote monitoring and support.
The energy storage projects are owned by Southern Power in partnership with KKR and AIP Management (on behalf of Danish pension funds PKA and PenSam), each of which have existing ownership interests in the Garland and Tranquillity solar facilities
