Powin was selected by DTE to deliver an 880MWh battery system for region’s largest standalone battery energy storage project.
PORTLAND, Ore. – July 9, 2024— Global energy storage platform provider Powin LLC (Powin), today announced it will supply its advanced battery storage technology to support DTE Energy’s new energy storage center in Michigan. Powin’s 880 megawatt-hour system will be installed at the site of DTE’s retired Trenton Channel Power Plant, a century-old coal-fired facility.
The new battery system will deliver reliable, emission-free power to DTE’s 2.3 million electric customers in southeast Michigan. The project, approved by the Michigan Public Service Commission, is a major milestone in DTE’s CleanVision plan to achieve net zero emissions. Powin’s battery energy storage system will help DTE take a major step toward its goal of more than doubling its total energy storage capacity while also supporting the State of Michigan’s target of 2.5GW of energy storage capacity by 2030.
The transition to clean energy is a crucial step in addressing the climate crisis and reducing dependence on fossil fuels. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, wind and solar accounted for 14% of U.S. electricity generation in 2022 and is expected to grow to 18% in 2024, highlighting the need for accelerated adoption of clean energy solutions. Projects like DTE’s Trenton Channel Energy Center demonstrate the essential role energy storage will play in the viability and scalability of clean energy alternatives.
“We are deeply honored to have been selected by DTE as their trusted partner for this project,” said Jeff Waters, CEO of Powin. “We believe this project will serve as an inspiration for the entire utility sector, demonstrating the potential and impact of advanced energy storage solutions in achieving a sustainable energy future.”
Powin was selected for this project in part due to its comprehensive energy storage offerings, which encompass integrated hardware, advanced software controls, and extensive service packages.
“DTE’s Trenton Channel Energy Center will greatly benefit from Powin’s advanced technologies,” said Matt Paul, President and Chief Operating Officer, DTE Electric. “This is an important project for our customers and communities, and we’re pleased to work with Powin to help make it a reality and bring us closer to our cleaner energy goals.”
The Trenton Channel Energy Center is projected to come online and be fully operational by 2026. Once completed, the project will rank among the largest standalone battery projects in the region.
